I agree that we can use the direct instruction approach to help learners have a better understanding of our topic especially for people who have very little prior knowledge about the topic. Step-to-step instructions introduce fundamental theories and concepts to learners very well, and instructors can correct early misconceptions and provide constructive feedback. Although it is a useful method to teach learners about the fundamentals, it may backfire due to repetitive activities which aim to strengthen learners’ understanding of concepts. A learning approach intends to inspire learners to discover the topic with enthusiasm; nonetheless, direct instructions can teach almost everyone. In my opinion, direction instruction is one of the optimal approaches for early learning activities of our learning resource. It is essential for learners to have precise definitions of the topic engraved in the memory first. However, critical thinking should be required for midterm or final assessments, which would be a fair evaluation for learners. Instructors can also gain a better overview of learners’ progress throughout the term and adjust the materials if it is needed.
